Today’s woman crush #womeninspire is none other than Ghanaian engineer and Chief Executive Officer of Vodafone Ghana, Patricia Obo-Nai.
Patricia is one of the women chalking successes in the telecommunications industry. With over 2 decades of experience in Information Technology (IT) and Telecommunications, Patricia is soon becoming a household name similar to the likes of Lucy Quist and Yolanda Cuba. She is the first Ghanaian to be appointed CEO of Vodafone Ghana.
After obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Patricia pursued her dreams further by enrolling for an Executive MBA and Executive Education degree from the University of Ghana and Kellogg School of Management in USA respectively. She also got an Executive Education degree from INSEAD in France.
Prior to assuming the role of CEO in 2019, Patricia had worked as a Chief Technology Officer and member of the Executive Committee of Vodafone. She was later promoted to Director of Fixed Business and Customer Operations. Before Vodafone, Patricia had also worked with Tigo’s Millicom Ghana Limited for 14 years.
Patricia’s telcos career began during her internship days at a telcos company. Even though her career started as an electrical engineer at the engineering department of the telco she worked for, she built a new skill set by studying law, marketing and business strategy management. According to her, she was preparing herself to be of value to her company. This new skill set prevented the company from laying her off when its managers were thinking of redundancy, because she was a good fit for the new roles. Little by little, Patricia was inching closer to the top.
Patricia changed the whole brand positioning of Vodafone at the time when technology was defining the narrative. The tag line for the company was changed to ‘The Future is Exciting, ready?’ to position the brand as a thoughtful brand with the future in mind! Watching her speak at a conference on becoming the brand of choice in the area of digitalization, Patricia admonished her audience to be true to their core and move along with technology by being flexible. She also stressed on automation and the need to reinvent oneself.
Patricia has received several awards for her numerous works. She received the Best Female Technologist Award at the annual Ghana Telecom Awards in June, 2012. She was also named as one of the 100 most inspiring women leaders in Vodafone in the year 2018 and the winner of the Presec Odade3 Honorary Torch Award in 2019 as well as the Ghana Women of Excellence Awards, 2020.
Today I celebrate you, Patricia! Thank you for being an inspiration to us all! Thank you for teaching us the importance of building a new skill set and reinventing ourselves!
